NHR TAX REGIME APPLICATION
For most new tax residents in Portugal in 2025, the relevant program is the Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation (IFICI), or NHR 2.0. This new 10-year regime is primarily aimed at attracting high-value professionals and innovators. Assistance with registering as a tax resident and applying for the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR 2.0) status (if applicable),can be highly beneficial for foreign passive income.
PROPERTY PURCHASE AS PER YOUR NEEDS AND BUDGET

Leveraging our vast network of over 400 real estate partners—from leading agencies to specialist boutique realtors—we offer an unparalleled search capability. This extensive reach allows us to find not just available properties, but often those hidden gems and off-market listings that perfectly align with your vision, budget, and specific visa requirements, ensuring your investment is both legally compliant and personally ideal.
DRIVERS LICENSE
While the requirement to exchange a foreign driving licence remains mandatory for some, Portugal has recently simplified rules for residents from OECD and CPLP countries (including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and Brazil), allowing them to use their original licence if they meet certain criteria (e.g., under 60 and licence less than 15 years old). For all other non-EU/EEA nationals, the exchange remains mandatory, with an application generally required within the first 90 days of obtaining residency to avoid fines and ensure continuous legal driving. Navigating these differing timelines and documentation requirements (including the mandatory electronic medical certificate and required certifications) can be complex. We offer this crucial administrative process as an inclusive service, ensuring you remain legally compliant and mobile on Portuguese roads without the stress of dealing with the IMT (Institute for Mobility and Transport) bureaucracy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions & Answer

D7 Questions

Q1: What is the primary requirement for the D7 Visa?
The primary requirement is demonstrating stable, recurrent passive income—meaning income derived from sources other than a direct salary. This includes pensions, rental properties, dividends, interest, and intellectual property royalties.
Q2: What is the minimum income needed for the D7 Visa?
The minimum income required is linked to the Portuguese minimum wage. The main applicant must show passive income equivalent to at least 100% of the annual minimum wage (currently around €10,440/year). Additional amounts are required for dependents (50% for a spouse, 30% per child).
Q3: Do I need to buy property to qualify for the D7?
No. The D7 Visa does not require a property purchase. You only need to demonstrate secure, long-term accommodation in Portugal, usually through a 12-month rental contract.
Q4: What are the residency requirements for the D7?
The D7 requires you to become a tax resident in Portugal. You must not be absent from the country for more than 6 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months during the first two years of the permit.
Q5: Can I work on a D7 Visa?
Yes. While the qualification is based on passive income, once you have your residence permit, you are generally free to take up professional activity, whether remote or employed, in Portugal.
D8 Questions

Q6: Who is the D8 Visa for, and what is the difference from the D7?
The D8 Visa is specifically for non-EU nationals who work remotely for companies or clients outside of Portugal. The key difference is that the D8 qualifies based on active, high salary income, whereas the D7 qualifies based on lower, passive income.
Q7: What is the minimum income requirement for the D8?
You must prove a gross monthly income of at least 4 times the Portuguese minimum wage (approx. €3,480 per month in 2025). This income must be consistent over the preceding 3 to 6 months.
Q8: Can freelancers and business owners apply for the D8?
Yes. The D8 is for both employed workers (proving an employment contract) and independent professionals/freelancers (proving service provision contracts, bank statements, and tax returns).
Q9: Does the D8 lead to permanent residency or citizenship?
Yes. Like the D7, the D8 is a full residency visa. After five years of legal residency, you are eligible to apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship which your eligible for after 10 years from the date of your first residency card, subject to passing a basic language test.
GOLDEN VISA Questions

Q10: What is the Golden Visa, and what is its main benefit?
The Golden Visa (ARI) grants residency in exchange for a qualifying capital investment. Its main benefit is the minimal physical stay requirement (typically just 7 days per year), making it ideal for investors who do not wish to immediately relocate.
Q11: Can I still buy real estate for the Golden Visa?
No. Since the major rule changes in October 2023, the purchase of residential real estate no longer qualifies for the Golden Visa. Commercial real estate is also generally excluded.
Q12: What are the main eligible investment options now?
The most common routes now involve capital transfers into qualifying Portuguese investment funds or venture capital funds, usually requiring a minimum investment of €500,000 or a donation of €250.000 to the governments Cultural Heritage Program.
Q13: What are the annual stay requirements for the Golden Visa?
The requirement is highly flexible: you must only stay in Portugal for an average of 7 days per year (or 14 days every two-year period) to maintain and renew your residence permit.
Q14: Does the Golden Visa provide a path to EU citizenship?
Yes. After maintaining the investment and the residence permit for five years, you and your family are eligible to apply for Portuguese Permanent Resdience, provided you meet the minimal stay and language requirements. For citizenship it is 10 years from the date you receive your first resdience card.
